Preparation for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test

Why the HS&E Test Matters

The CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test is a compulsory requirement for many construction workers in the UK. Passing this test demonstrates that you understand vital safety practices, legal obligations, and environmental responsibilities on site. It is often a prerequisite for obtaining or renewing a CSCS card.

Failing to prepare can slow your career progress, cost you retakes, and risk non-compliance with site safety standards. Investing time now to prepare properly pays off in confidence, competence, and career access.

Which Test Is Right for You?

There are three main versions of the HS&E Test, depending on your role in construction:

✔ Operatives: For site labourers and general workers. Covers basic health & safety, environmental awareness, PPE, and hazards.

✔ Specialists: For skilled trades such as plumbers, electricians, and demolition workers. Includes core topics plus trade-specific questions.

✔ Managers & Professionals (MAP): For supervisors, managers, and professionals. Includes broader topics such as legal responsibility, risk management, and welfare.

What the Test Covers

All versions of the HS&E Test assess your knowledge across multiple domains, such as:

✔ Legal and management responsibilities

✔ Occupational health, wellbeing and welfare

✔ General safety practices

✔ High risk activities such as working at height, lifting and excavations

✔ Environmental protection, waste, pollution, and sustainability

How to Prepare Effectively

Here are some recommended steps to help you prepare and pass the test with confidence:

✔ Use official revision materials published by CITB.

✔ Take mock tests under timed conditions to get used to the format.

✔ Work through sample questions thoroughly to understand correct answers.

✔ Attend a short training or revision course to reinforce knowledge.

✔ Use multiple formats such as books, apps, and online tools to revise.

✔ Start revising early and be consistent rather than cramming last minute.

After the Test

If you pass, you will be eligible to apply for or renew your relevant CSCS card. Your result is usually valid for two years. If you fail, review weaker areas, practise more, and book a retake after the waiting period.
